RECYCLING GETS ITS START IN TROUT CREEK! by Janet Dellaria
(See photos below)

Trout Creek is a cluster of about 50 - 60 houses and is situated in the Ottawa National Forest.  The nearest gas station is eleven miles away.  The town has a little grocery store, a wonderful restaurant, a post office and four churches.  Most of the population is over 55 years old.  AND, Trout Creek has the only recycle drop off center for miles around!

In February, 2005, a group of residents gathered to discuss ways to begin some form of recycling for the town. Since there was no curbside service and the two transfer stations were more than an hour away, what would make it more desirable for area folks to recycle?  We got it! A place where everyone could drop off their recyclables.  Don Lenef suggested the old school bus, and the project was underway.  Pete, Scott and Don M. helped to move the bus to its new location.

Tom, Don L., and Dick designed the plywood window flaps which opened into bins.  Pete applied the primer coat, Janet came up with the exterior paint design, and Catherine drew it onto the bus. Judy and Tom laid out the interior collection stations. Arvella and Lucy made telephone calls. Everyone participated with the inception, conception, and birthing process.  A "Paint the Bus Day” was set and the fun continued.  About 15 adults and 6 children helped paint the bus with trees, a trout stream, an eagle, butterflies, and two bear cubs looking into the back door window.  What a great day!

What a great design and paint job.  What a tribute to the spirit of the local people and their concern for the long range welfare of the environment.

Recycling is one of our answers to keeping our area pristine, the drinking water delicious, and the nation’s natural resources sustainable.

We helped to keep the following materials out of the Greenland Landfill by recycling them.  These numbers are for a seven month period (September, 2005 through March, 2006) and are guesstimates since we do not use a scale.

            Glass             450 lbs
            Metal cans        350 lbs
            Milk jugs         125 lbs
            Papers            2000 lbs*
            Cardboard          unknown**

This totals to a little over 1 1/2 tons!

*May be higher because many people take papers to Ewen themselves.
**Cardboard is picked up by the Copper Country Mental Health organization and we have no way of knowing the amount for sure.  Our guess is that there are approximately 50 to 75 boxes a week.  Over a seven month period it may amount to 30 weeks X 75 boxes per week = 225 boxes.  This does not account for a specially arranged box pick-up to a local author’s
house who just had a huge book order delivery.
